1. Basic Requirements

Before you begin, ensure you meet the following criteria:

  • Age: At least 21 years old.
  • Driving Experience: Held a full UK or EU driving licence for at least 3 years out of the past 6 years.
  • Driving Record: No more than 6 penalty points on your licence.
  • Criminal Record: Pass an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

2. Apply for an Enhanced DBS Check

An enhanced DBS check is mandatory before applying to become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).

Steps to Apply:

  1. Online Application:
    • Visit the GOV.UK website to start your application.
    • Use the following details during your application:
      • Organisation PIN: 105205
      • Secret Word: Instructor
  2. Identity Verification:
    • After completing the online form, verify your identity at a Post Office that offers ‘CRB and ID verification service’.
    • Bring the printed application form with barcodes and 3 original forms of ID (e.g., passport, driving licence, utility bill less than 3 months old).

Cost:

Post Office Verification Fee: £8.22, payable at the Post Office.

Processing Time:

The DBS check usually takes around 2 to 3 weeks to process.

3. ADI Qualification Process

The qualification process consists of three parts:

  1. Part 1: Theory Test
    • Cost: £81
    • Details: 100 multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception test.
  2. Part 2: Driving Ability Test
    • Cost: £111
    • Details: An advanced driving test assessing your driving skills.
  3. Part 3: Instructional Ability Test
    • Cost: £111
    • Details: Assessment of your ability to instruct learner drivers.

Important Note: You must pass all three parts within 2 years of passing the Part 1 test.

4. Apply to Join the ADI Register

After successfully passing all three parts, you can apply to join the ADI register.

Application Process:

  • Fee: £300
  • Requirements:
    • A recent (within 6 months) criminal record disclosure number.
    • Your driving licence details.
    • Payment information.

What to Expect:

Once your application is approved, you’ll receive your ADI certificate (badge), allowing you to legally offer paid driving instruction.
